Family-Friendly Ways to Close out Summer in Boston

As excited as we are for our morning and afternoon programming to start back up this week, that also means we’re officially moving into fall and putting summer behind us. We’ll miss the long sunny days of summer, and find it can be nice to squeeze a few fun, family-friendly activities in during the last few days of the season as a way to build up some extra memories we can look back on during cold winter days cooped up inside later this year! Here are a few of our favorite ways to close out summer with some warm-weather bucket list activities you may not have gotten to yet:

Go out for ice cream. Odd Fellows Ice Cream Co in Chestnut Hill has great ice cream and just opened right at The Street shopping plaza. If you go at the right time you can even stay to hear an outdoor concert through the Summer in the City at The Street Music with Berklee series where they play every Thursday from 6-7:30pm through September.

Visit a splashpad. Check out our post from earlier this summer on great playgrounds in the area, and choose one with a great splashpad for an afternoon of fun.

Bring a picnic to Castle Island. Castle Island in South Boston is one of the best beaches right in the city, and has a large picnic area and playground that you can spend an afternoon or evening at for a last summertime hurrah. There’s a parking lot, and you can also buy food at Sullivan’s snack shack if you don’t want to bring your own picnic.

Ride the carousel on the greenway. This fun kids attraction is a great destination for an afternoon downtown, and if you catch it in September it’s much less busy than it can be in the heat of the Summer. A ticket to ride is just $4 per person, and riding a beautiful carousel outdoors is something kids remember and talk about for months to come.

Who knows, maybe one of these outings will even become a family tradition and a way you say goodbye to summer for years to come. Is one of these your favorite ways to close out summer, or do you have any other ideas of ways you say goodbye to the season? Leave a comment on this post to share if so!
